J. Stuart Ryan graduated from Lehigh in 1981 with a bachelor of science degree in chemical engineering and from Harvard in 1986 with an M.B.A. degree. At Lehigh, he was president of Chi Psi Fraternity, a member of the golf team, and a member of Tau Beta Pi, the national engineering honor society.
Stu is the founding owner and president of Rydout, LLC, a private investment firm focused on energy and power. Since 2003, Rydout has worked with SPO Partners, a Mill Valley, California-based investment firm. Stu has served as a director and chairman of the board of Calpine Corporation, chairman and CEO of Aggregates USA, and COO of The AES Corporation.
Stu served on the Lehigh University Board of Trustees from 2010 through 2016 and on a number of board committees, including audit, finance, and academic affairs. Additionally, he served as chairman of the Asa Packer Society, was a member of Lehigh’s Global Council, and was a member of the P.C. Rossin College of Engineering and Applied Science Dean’s Advisory Council. In addition to their generosity to Lehigh, Stu and his wife, Sarah, have supported endowed scholarships at Saint Ignatius College Preparatory School, The California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco, and Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. Stu has also served on the vestry of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Ross, California.
Stu and Sarah’s philanthropic priority at Lehigh has been the John W. Ryan, Ph.D. Endowed Scholarship, honoring Stu’s father. They have also supported the Paul J. Bruxelles ’80 Endowed Scholarship Fund and the S. David Wu Endowed Scholarship Fund.
Stu and Sarah live in Belvedere, California, and have three children: Clare ’11, Will ’14, and Madelyn.
